  REVIEW:

Tenacious D . . . this movie confirms what many of us have long believed; yes, the 'D' stands for Dumb!

Although we’re sure you can’t consider this a true story in any stretch of the imagination, it is a strange concoction of regular movie and musical telling a “story” of how Jack Black and Kyle Gass met and created their band Tenacious D.  It begins with a rockin’ scene when Jack Black was a kid and he informed his parents of his grand plan to become a rock and roll star.  After running away from home, Jack finds Kyle pan-handling on a California beach.  They decided to hook up and create the greatest band of all time.  But, they only way they think they can pull off becoming legendary is to find and steal Satan’s guitar pick of destiny.

Regardless of the script, Jack Black is inherently funny.  If he were cop, you'd probably laugh as he was reading you your rights.  So, because there's lots of Jack Black being Jack Black in the movie, Tenacious D definitely has some laughs.  Unfortunately, though, the story crosses that very fine line between silly and stupid - most notably when Satan himself makes an appearance.  A couple of goofy guys trying to conjure up the devil to create the ultimate rock-n-roll song - that's kinda funny.  When they actually do conjure up the devil, it takes on that dark, bizarre comic book feel, and that's apparently just a little too "rock-n-roll" for us.  Nonetheless, with its Jack “Blackness” and actually just the right amount of Tim Robbins and Ben Stiller in cameo appearances, it delivers some entertainment value – even more so if you happen to be “under the influence.”

  MOVIE NIGHT TRAFFIC LIGHT:

On the Movie Night Traffic Light on a scale of GREEN meaning “Go – it’s a must see”, YELLOW meaning “Caution – it’s okay” and RED meaning “No - stop don’t do it."

We rate Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny YELLOW.  Caution – this one is just okay.
